Communities throughout the United States are turning to the “heart and soul” of their most distinct districts to develop some of the greatest, untapped resources: their cultural assets. These cultural assets can serve as the basis for unique forms of social and economic development, where they are leveraged to provide diverse benefits such as upward social mobility, new dollars from a rapidly expanding heritage tourism market, and more effective forms of community engagement and empowerment. In particular, Latino communities – rich in arts, culture, heritage, language and food – have within them the resources needed to improve their quality of life and build community pride.

A Celebration of Value and Opportunity: La Comunidad is a groundbreaking national conference that will explore the vibrant world of asset-based community development in Latino communities. It will bring civic and community leaders together to build a new framework for understanding how arts, culture and heritage assets are catalysts for neighborhood cohesion and economic, social, political and youth development in inner city, suburban and rural environments.  Through a series of plenary sessions, breakout sessions, keynote presentations and offsite tours, A Celebration of Value and Opportunity: La Comunidad approaches the needs and challenges of the Latino community with a holistic outlook that will give them the tools to shape their future.

Philadelphia’s unique vision in cultivating a strong relationship with the Latino community will serve as an inspirational background for engaging diverse Latino and non-Latino community leaders from around the country.
